How do we get started?

This project has a lofty mission: we seek to send 1,000,000 hand-written letters to DEMOCRATS who have yet to endorse marriage for same-sex couples by December 31, 2009. We plan to target DEMOCRATS at all levels of government from city council members to President-Elect Barack Obama.

WHAT TO DO ASAP:

Today's DEMOCRAT to write to. (Feel free to write to other officials and to suggest officials to me at bragg.william@yahoo.com) : SENATOR ROBERT BYRD (Look for addresses below)

1. Write your own hand-written, personalized letter right now. Why hand-written? Because politicians (or their staff) actually read hand-written letters. Emailing elected officials may be better than nothing but barely. Why personalized? Because your own personal story is very compelling. Get personal in your letter! How does marriage inequality hurt you or your family or your lesbian older sister or your gay best friend or your grandchild? Finally, unequivocally state your support for "full marriage equality" and ask the elected official to state their support publically.

2. Scan and photocopy your letter. Email a copy of your letter as a PDF attachment to your supportive friends, family, and coworkers. Send an explanation of the One Million Letters for Marriage Equality Project and a link to this blog along with your email. Mail photocopies with similar information to supportive individuals who may not be good with computers. :)

3. Send your letter to a DEMOCTRATIC elected official. It is especially important to write to local DEMOCRATIC elected officials because you may be the first or only letter that they will receive. Why are we targeting DEMOCRATS? 1. Democrats are in power these days. 2. Democrats claim to be advocates for civil rights but have thus far failed to actively seek marriage equality for same-sex couples. 3. Democrats may listen to us. 4. "Change" has not come until we see marriage equality in our country.

4. Get creative in getting the message out about this project and about same-sex marriage equality. Organize on Facebook and Myspace and other websites. Twitter. Write in your own blog. Create a video on Youtube about your hand-written, personalized letter writing experience. Text and call friends. Other ideas about how to organize will be listed on this website in the future, so stay tuned.

5. Email me! My name is Bill and my email is bragg.william@yahoo.com. I would love to see a copy of your letter. I would also like to hear your ideas about how to make this project work, how to spread the word, and how we can meet our goal of 1,000,000 letters. I will reply to your email with a useful PowerPoint about letter writing, organizing at your campus and in your community, and the issues of marriage equality. Finally, thank you for your effort. We are what change is all about.

IF YOU ARE SUPER PUMPED ABOUT MAKING CHANGE:

1. Have a letter writing campaign event at your campus or church. Email me for a PowerPoint, and information will be forthcoming about this effort.
2. Become a Super Letter Writer. Get emailed the address of Democratic public official daily and commit to writing a handwritten letter. Email for more info on this possibility.

A Sister Site with a Parallel Mission

Thank you to all those people who are already making the One Milion Letters for Marriage Equality Project a success. We have had thousands of hits on the site and I've been getting lots of great feedback and interest.

A special thanks to Maria who has become our second Super Letter Writer. She will receive a daily email with the address of an elected DEMOCRAT who has yet to support marriage equality every day until December 31, 2009 and will try her best to write every single day. Think of that: 365 letters! One person can make a big difference.

Another email from Mavi has inspired me to create a second blog. She sent me a video with a message for Barack Obama and Rick Warren and wondered how we can work integrate video into our effort. That email gave birth to this site.

Any other good ideas out there? Don't let them go to waste. Let's make them happen. Here is my email: bragg.william@yahoo.com . My name is Bill.
